Scifi Universe

Warning: yet another article that I wrote for my own amusement. You have been warned.

This is a simple thought experiment, or perhaps the beginning of a Scify novel.

In some time travel novels, they bring up the concept of alternate timelines. This means that when you make a big decision between choice A and choice B, you actually did both. In universe A, you went one way, and in universe B (perhaps just created by your choice), you went the other way.

Branching timelines, were created. These branch again and again, creating a web of multiple realities or universes. Now when we talk about them all collectively, we can talk about the Multiverse.

This is old hat to you scify fans, and I haven’t told you any new ideas.

However, what if these multiple timelines do exist? What properties might they have?

I would suggest that they probably spontaneously merge together from time to time, and sometimes separate again for no good reason at all. This concept could be used to explain many concepts from Physics, or even Magic.

For example, precognition could be other versions of yourself, experiencing things a little ahead of your timeline, and communicating this back to your present self. Ghosts could occur when 2 timelines merge, where a person is alive in one, but not in the other, and you are in the dominant one, where the person is not alive. This of course implies and requires that merges are not complete, but rather some elements are merged and some are just left out, when there is duplication.

And I believe that I have rambled enough for now, and I hope that some of you will be inspired to write that scify novel now, which I would certainly read. And next week, perhaps I will lay out my Zombie-world rules, and we can argue about that as well.
