Trehalose, a sugar substitute for the last 20 years, is showing up everywhere, if you read the ingredients closely. I use it in my coffee every morning.
And it is naturally found in various things that we commonly eat, including honey, sherries, brewer’s and baker’s yeasts, supermarket mushrooms, lobster, crabs, sunflower, shrimp, seeds etc. [9]
It has also been used to prolong food or vaccine shelf life. It protects foods from getting stale or drying out, and protects fruits and vegetables from discoloring. [1] It stabilizes living systems during freeze–thaw, heat–cooling, dehydration–rehydration cycles. [3]
But for aging researchers, it has some more profound properties. It activates autophagy and improves mitochondrial quality [2] acts as an exercise mimetic to delay brain aging [3] reverses arterial aging [4] protects against oxidative stress [6] extends the lifespan of lab animals like C.elegans [7] inhibits memory issues in aging rats [8] and may even help obesity and NAFLD fatty liver disease progression. [5]
In fact, if you google on Trehalose, you will find such a long list of health benefits, that you might think it was the latest diet fad.
So instead of worrying about whether your sugar substitute is carcinogenic or causes brain issues, you might consider trehalose. It is the only sugar substitute I’m aware of where they find more and more good properties over time.
And it makes pretty good cookies.
